Reconnecting with loved ones may be one of the most meaningful things we can do for ourselves. But it’s not easy to find time in our busy schedules to find a retreat that works for everyone. Luckily, we are in close proximity to some of the most romantic, relaxing, and downright fun destinations in the mid-Atlantic region. Here is an inspiring mix of weekend retreats that promise to infuse a little recreation and stimulation into your much-anticipated couples’ escape.
Scenic Country Retreat
Skaneateles, New York
Located in New York’s Finger Lakes Wine Country, Mirbeau Inn & Spa transports you away to the French countryside with Old World French country architecture and a visually pristine landscape. This chateau-like inn and spa creates a unique experience with the amenities of a boutique country estate surrounded by scenery that was patterned after Monet-inspired gardens.
“Mirbeau is designed for a couples’ retreat. We try to help them find balance and an escape from their lives by providing a total experience. We offer warm, cozy, and inviting accommodations set in the French country estate setting. We also provide a state-of-the-art spa and an intimate dining experience with no more than 50 seats all arranged in deuces, filled with candles, and a view of the beautiful stone fireplace,” says general manager, Chris Pulito.
This luxury resort has 34 guest rooms and four private, romantic cottages, which have a view of the gardens and pond area as well as the rolling hillside. The spa offers 18 treatment rooms, most featuring fireplaces and private sound systems, which are designed to soothe the senses. The spa also offers classic massages, body wraps, and facial treatments with an outdoor hot tub and fireplace.
A favorite girlfriends’ or couples’ retreat, Mirbeau Inn & Spa is located near over 100 local wineries and evokes the feeling of traveling to the Parisian countryside.
High Rolling Getaway
Atlantic City, New Jersey
If upstate New York is a little too far away, you might consider the grand dame of the Atlantic City, New Jersey strip of casinos, The Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa. This luxury hotel offers many of the Las Vegas amenities right in our own backyard.
“Borgata is the first Las Vegas-style destination on the East Coast, offering an unparalleled travel experience in Atlantic City with luxurious hotel accommodations, celebrity-chef restaurants, high-caliber entertainment, two award-winning spas, and exciting nightlife and gaming options all under one roof. Borgata offers guests the one-of-a-kind experience of being in the center of it all,” says Joe Lupo, senior vice president of operations for Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa.
The Borgata experience has something for every couple. “Borgata offers guests the opportunity to escape from their everyday lives, creating a new and unique experience with each and every visit. Couples can enjoy a romantic getaway with finely-appointed hotel accommodations, choosing between a range of couples’ treatments at our award-winning spas, and dinner for two at any of our signature restaurants, including regional Italian fare at Forneletto Cucina & Bar or acclaimed seafood at Seablue by Michael Mina,” says Lupo.
Mountaintop Village Adventure
Snowshoe, West Virginia
For a more adventurous getaway, couples might consider a wintery escape at Snowshoe Mountain Resort in West Virginia. “Snowshoe Mountain is a perfect getaway for couples, no matter what their personality. For adventurous, outdoorsy types, there’s nothing like spending the day together cruising the region’s best slopes. A sunset snowshoe walk is a romantic way to spend an afternoon and with most units offering fireplaces and hot tubs, the end of the day is relaxing and romantic,” says Laura Parquette, brand and communications manager for Snowshoe Mountain Resort.
Snowshoe offers a variety of bars, a nightclub, and a comedy club. “Spend the night together meeting new friends, dancing, and laughing while still enjoying Snowshoe’s breathtaking views and endless entertainment opportunities. Skiing/snowboarding is also a great couples’ activity. Take a private lesson together and bond over learning a new skill. Lift rides can be cozy and intimate—you have to cuddle to stay warm,” continues Parquette.
This mountain village resort with its stunning sunsets and quaint, romantic setting is a perfect getaway for couples who enjoy snow adventures and cozy, rustic lodges to warm up to at the end of the day.
Tuscanesque Vineyards Steeped in History
You don’t have to visit Tuscany or Provence to experience good wine in the mid-Atlantic region. You only have to drive a few short hours away in the direction of Thomas Jefferson’s famed home at Monticello, and you’ll find the picturesque Barboursville Vineyards.
“Barboursville Vineyards is a large historic estate in the hillsides of Virginia. We produce world class wine, have beautiful accommodations restored to enjoy history of place and have an exquisite Italian restaurant,” says general manager and longtime winemaker, Luca Paschina.
Part of the Barboursville retreat is the lavishly restored 1804 Inn that dates back to the 1800s and the in-house restaurant Palladio. The authentic Italian cuisine is paired with the finest wine and here are just a few of the menu favorites: Zuppa di Mandorle (chilled almond and roasted garlic gazpacho), Tortelli di Zucca (roasted butternut squash filled ravioli), and Brasato di Maiale (braised pork shoulder).
So whether you are a couple who enjoys fine wine and elegant food, or like to ski or go snow tubing or just need a spa experience to rejuvenate your senses, a couples’ getaway may help you to reconnect and renew your relationship.
