Home for Our TroopsYou’re probably already familiar with the concept of ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” but you may not know about the philanthropic home building projects taking place in your own backyard.

Recently, Case Design/Remodeling, Inc., a DC-area home improvement company, along with Home for Our Troops, a non-profit group that builds specially adapted homes for severely injured veterans, built a home in Frederick, Maryland for Sgt. Adam Kisielewski, a Marine who was injured during a tour in Iraq, his wife, Carrie, and their young son, Evan.

“It touched my heart. Veterans give a lot to this country,” says Bruce Case, president of Case Design/Remodeling, of Kisielewski’s story. “Every business has a soul, just like people do, and I feel like we needed to do something for our soul as a business.”

Kisielewski lost his left arm and his right leg below the knee when an explosive device detonated near Fallujah, Iraq in August 2005, according to the Home for Our Troops website. The Marine’s new home is completely accessible and specially designed and built to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program’s guidelines, says Case.

The Build Brigade, which consisted of Case employees led by former Marine James Wood, friends and family of Kisielewski, and volunteers, worked to complete the construction of the entire home, including roofing, siding, windows, and doors. The interior of the home and landscaping are expected to be completed by June for Kisielewski and his family.
