Tips + Trends

Green dining roomFor the last couple of years, I’ve been trying to convince my mother to paint our kitchen yellow. Why? Because for me, at least, the color evokes happiness and sunshine, which sounds like a great way to start the day.

Apparently I’m not alone in my feelings of color psychology. Debbie Zimmer, color expert at the Paint Quality Institute, also believes certain paint colors can help set the mood in a room…and your mind. According to Zimmer, studies have shown the brain creates positive psychological vibes when you see yellow and the color is also great for jump starting creative juices (I hope you’re reading this, Mom).

My favorite color, purple, is best known for it’s ability to stimulate brain activity, while green has a soothing effect and is a good choice for both bedrooms and dining rooms.

Blue is also a great color for bedrooms, as it’s been shown to slow pulse rates and lower body temperatures, which are perfect conditions for sleeping. Meanwhile, red is a rich, passionate color best used in dining rooms.

The “non-colors”–black and white–also have their place in the home. Black is a great accent color indoors and out and adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to a paint color scheme. Too much black can be depressing, warns Zimmer. White conveys peace and simplicity. When used throughout the home, white can create the illusion of space.
