I am always looking for new places to have a nice, pleasant meal in a quiet, comfortable environment with my three young children and last week I found Martha and Mary’s Restaurant on Main Street in Reisterstown, Maryland. From the outside it looks more like a beauty parlor than a restaurant, but as soon as you broach the entrance, you see the clean, open, stylish décor of this charming, extremely inviting setting.
Deceptively roomy with cast iron tables and leather backed marble booths, the atmosphere is casual chic with pendant lighting dotting the landscape. An oversize counter with a large flashing digital display of the menu beckons you to come and decide on a surprising array of comfort food. I had a tuna fish sandwich with cole slaw, which was hearty and refreshingly served with subtle nuances that left me curious for more. The menu is strangely diverse for a Main Street eatery with items like “Chicken-N-Dumplings,” baskets of “Fried Shrimp,” and a “Sloppy Joan,” which is a take on the traditional sloppy Joe.
My taste buds were left wanting more so the very next day, I returned with my three children who I don’t normally venture out with in a public restaurant, but decided to try the breakfast. It was phenomenal. The price is extraordinarily reasonable and the selection and amount of food prepared was exceptional. As I was leaving the restaurant with my four, five and six year olds, the owner approached me and said, “Was there something wrong with your food?” I was slightly embarrassed but answered, “My children and I loved the food, but they aren’t very good eaters and the portion sizes were a little larger than we are used to.” Just the idea that in a world where chain restaurants reign supreme, this little gem of a restaurant is surviving is amazing to me – no doubt because of the quality of the food, the service, and the inviting atmosphere.
Martha and Mary’s Restaurant is located on 75 Main Street in Reisterstown and is open Monday through Saturday 7:00am to 9:30pm and on Sunday from 7:00am – 8:00pm. If you are in the neighborhood, check it out.
