The other day while visiting the 2009 DC Design House (more on that in another post), I thought I would also pop in on some of the shops in Georgetown’s Cady’s Alley Design District. If you haven’t been, the area is a must visit destination for design aficionados or anyone looking to purchase fine furnishings and accessories for the home. Spanning an entire city block, Cady’s Alley complements Georgetown’s locally-based antiques and furnishings shops with some of the world’s top high-end design companies.
I first stopped into Baker Furniture on M Street, the anchor store for the district with 23,000 square feet of showroom space. Saw some great old favorites as well as new offerings from Baker-look for our August issue and our Great Finds department featuring new designs.

One thing I love about Cady’s Alley is the experience-not only are the furnishings, fixtures, etc. available in the stores beautiful, the store themselves are, too. JANUS et Cie (also on M street)is a great example-their furnishings are complemented with sophisticated and modern architectural design that features green, leafy wallscapes, soaring ceilings, and huge plate glass windows.

Rounding out my M Street tour (before my meter expired) I checked out BoConcept and Poggenpohl. BoConcept is always a favorite for high quality design at affordable prices, and I saw some really great pieces that are now on my wish list.
Along with Boffi Studio, Waterworks, Bulthaup, Ann Sacks, and Pedini, Poggenpohl is a must destination for anyone renovating or building a new kitchen or bath. I couldn’t grab any photos of Poggenpohl-to protect their designers from being copied, the company has a policy against allowing photos. Sorry you’ll have to make the trip yourself.
Other noteworthy Cady’s Alley retailers include Contemporaria, Design within Reach, Ligne Roset, M2L, Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers, and Yves Delorme. For more info visit cadysalley.com.

B&B Italia is also located in Cady’s Alley, Georgetown. Down a side street on 33rd and an entrance on Cady’s Alley. B&B Italia is one of the top quality brands of contemporary furniture from Italy. The store has a dedicated space to the MAXALTO collection – a more transitional style.
