New Plants!

Every spring, garden centers across the country unveil new plant introductions for gardeners eager to diversify their horticultural palette. Here are some of our favorite new summer bloomers well suited to the Chesapeake region.

Green Envy Echinacea

Green Envy Echinacea

GREEN ENVY ECHINACEA
Developed by hobbyist gardener Mark Veeder as a cultivar of Echinacea Purpurea, ‘Green Envy’ joins the family of perennial beauties that include the familiar purple coneflower (the one purported to yield medicinal value), white, and a recently developed bright mango colored flower. It is the jade green petal color of ‘Green Envy’ and the deeper green of its cone-shaped center that distinguish this breed from the others, making it a true one-of-a-kind bloom. The vibrant color persists from mid-July through and into the fall.

GOMPHRENA FIREWORKS
Unlike any globe amaranth ever seen, Burpee’s new unique annual Gomphrena Fireworks quickly grows to form a full, dense, landscape specimen, eventually reaching up to three to four feet tall and one to two feet wide. An abundance of strong, tall stems are topped with exploding bursts of full, large one and half inch blooms in hot pink tipped with bright yellow. This newcomer is a showstopper in the garden and conversation piece when cut for a mixed bouquet.

SAPPHIRE INDIGO CLEMATIS SERIESCLEMATIS ‘CLEMINOV’
This award-winning clematis is prized for its profuse, bluish-purple, dramatic flowers and compact growth habit. Light green foliage makes a magnificent backdrop to the dark purple-blue to dark violet flowers with dark violet stamens. With a bloom time from late spring well into autumn, this new plant is a three-season pleaser.

HEAVEN SCENT™ GARDENIA
New to the Gardener’s Confidence® Collection the Heaven Scent™ Gardenia puts on quite a show as it accumulates intensely fragrant blooms. A wonderful repeat bloomer, gardeners will enjoy the fragrant, elegant blooms from late spring through summer. Heaven Scent™ Gardenia has a tight, upright form so it fits into any garden and works well in containers. In fall, notice the colorfully red, yellow, and orange seedpods on this exciting new variety.

Endless Summer Hydrangea, 'Blushing Bride'

ENDLESS SUMMER HYDRANGEA ‘BLUSHING BRIDE’
Part of Bailey’s Endless Summer® collection, ‘Blushing Bride’ blooms with radiant pure white, semi-double florets that gradually mature to a sweet pink blush. ‘Blushing Bride’ reliably blooms on both old and new growth, producing more blooms all season long, and the full yet compact growth habit makes it an ideal plant for decorative containers, elegant as a stand-alone shrub, or combined with other garden plants.

FLOWER CARPET® ROSE ‘AMBER’
New to Monrovia’s Flower Carpet® rose collection, the much-awaited ‘Amber’ is a mounding, ground-cover rose that blooms profusely from spring through fall. Fragrant semi-double, peachy amber blooms emerge from soft red buds and fade to a delicate seashell pink.
