By John Tullock
John Tullock wants gardeners to know that hardy orchids may be easier to cultivate than they may think, and in his book, “Growing Hardy Orchids,” imparts the basics of orchid cultivation and propagation through easy to follow tips and beautiful illustrative photos.
Tullock not only explores the debate over native orchid conservation but shares his view: he believes gardeners should grow orchids to maintain the species since natural habitats are dwindling. In the native habitat orchids grow through a symbiotic relationship with various fungi—Tullock explains this relationship and its importance to healthy home cultivation while also providing readers with a season-to-season calendar of when different varieties of orchids bloom.
“Growing Hardy Orchids” is a great gardener’s companion in that it provides the tools necessary to start cultivating, and catalogs 103 hardy and half-hardy plants as well as an extensive list of suppliers and organizations. Tullock may be correct about the simplicity of growing hardy orchids, but his book makes the task even easier.
