Smitten with the light bulb since the 1960s, contemporary German designer Ingo Maurer brings us a collection of paper lamps from the “MaMo Nouchies” series, each named for ancient tribal spirits from around the world. To complete this project, Maurer, who specializes in residential lighting systems, teamed up with colleague Dagmar Mombach, who developed a technique for transforming paper. Mombach’s method, performed by hand according to the Japanese tradition, often requires several treatments to achieve the look.
Part sculpture, part lamp, the MaMo Nouchies collection, “a cross-cultural adventure,” as Maurer once put it, fuses eastern techniques with western gestaltung, which, in Maurer’s native tongue means “creating” or “shaping.” The result of this fusion is a true innovation in lighting design.
