Celebrating its 70th Anniversary, this year’s Maryland House and Garden Pilgrimage (MHGP) spans six counties and features nearly 50 historic sites. A non-profit organization, the MHGP is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of architecturally significant properties in the State of Maryland. The tours of historic homes and gardens occur in six Maryland Counties, including Charles County (April 21), Prince George’s County (May 5), Baltimore County (May 12), Somerset and Worcester Counties (May 13), and Anne Arundel County (May 19).

The 2007 tours are particularly exciting for MHGP coordinators who have organized a group of destinations that offer something for everyone. Tour participants may visit properties such as the Governor John Walter Smith House and the Historic London Town and Gardens, many of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places or are registered as National Historic Landmarks. “Guests will see rare collections and period pieces in some of Maryland’s most beautifully restored private homes,” says MHGP Executive Director Margie Powell. “We will explore antique rose gardens, wildflower walks and nature trails, tour historic farm and school houses, view archeological finds, and see architectural styles including Greek Revival, Colonial, Federal, and Arts & Crafts. Plus, visitors will learn fascinating and often quirky facts about Maryland’s historic figures,” added Ms. Powell.

Tour participants will experience behind the scenes visits to some of Maryland’s most spectacular historic properties, and the funds raised through ticket sales will help the MHGP support a variety of special community projects in each county, including development of a hardscape garden area in Charles County, preservation and treatment of historic books and archives in Prince George’s County, renovation of a historic chapel in Baltimore County, restoration of a woodland garden in Anne Arundel County, and support of initiatives of the Lower Eastern Shore Heritage Council.
